Princess Beatrice birthday: Royal pioneered important royal tradition

Princess Beatrice was born on August 8, 1988. Her parents, Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, proudly showed off their new baby girl, their first child. They posed with her outside the Portland Hospital.

It’s this location that makes the birth so remarkable. It was one of the high profile royal births around the time to take place at a private hospital.

The Portland Hospital is a private maternity hospital in London, which only opened five years before Beatrice’s birth.

The trend for having royal babies in hospital only began with Princess Diana, just a few years before with Prince William and Harry.

However, Sarah Ferguson took this one step further, by opting for a different hospital to the one chosen by Diana, the Lindo Wing.

Princess Beatrice was the first member of the Royal Family to be born at the hospital.

Princess Eugenie was also born there. Later the children of Princess Margaret’s daughter Lady Sarah Chatto were born there.

More notable people have also been born in the prestigious maternity ward.

Fascinating, Beatrice’s husband was born there the year the ward opened in 1983.

These odds are currently at 1 – 2, royal baby fans will be thrilled to know.

“We think that Prince Louis will have another baby brother or sister join his family in the future. We make it odds on that William and Kate have a fourth baby,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.
